SnugSpace Home Insulation Programme
Increase Your Home Comfort, Lower Your Bills, Reduce Your Impact
After successfully running three home solar programmes, Greystones & Delgany Sustainable Energy Community (GDSEC) is excited to announce the launch of the “SnugSpace” programme, our first attic and cavity wall insulation initiative designed for local homeowners aiming to enhance their home insulation levels.
Upgrading home insulation can deliver the most significant improvement in comfort and energy performance with minimal financial investment.
Did you know that up to 30% of a home’s heat escapes through the roof, and another 30% through the walls? Small investments in insulation can yield substantial savings, with many homeowners seeing a payback period of just a few years.
SnugSpace operates as a community-led “Meitheal”, inspired by the old Irish tradition where neighbours would come together to make large tasks easier. This approach not only provides free advice but also leverages collective bargaining to secure potential price discounts for all participants. Additionally, if eligible for a SEAI home insulation grant, a significant portion of these costs will be covered.

Frequently Asked Questions - SnugSpace
Greystones & Delgany Sustainable Energy Community (GDSEC) is a subgroup of Greystones Tidy Towns and is a registered SEC with the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland). Staffed by volunteers David Emerson and Adam Calihman under the mentorship of an officially registered SEC technical advisor, Simon Whelan, our mission is to explore options for reducing our community’s carbon emissions and increase the energy efficiency and sustainability of our buildings, transport and other aspects of our lives.
With this in mind, we launched our “SnugSpace” attic and cavity wall insulation initiative. Through our advisory and administrative support role, we aim to help homeowners who are interested in installing attic floor and/or cavity wall insulation to (a) understand the products, (b) identify their insulation needs, and (c) get a competitive quote from a top installer.
- You own the house for which you are applying.
- It is within the Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole & Newcastle catchment areas.
- Your attic insulation is 200mm (8 inches) or less (if applying for attic floor insulation).
- Your home has cavity walls which are unfilled (if applying for cavity-wall insulation).
- Your property was built and occupied prior to 2011.
- Your property has not received prior SEAI funding for the type of insulation you wish to install (note: if you’ve previously received a SEAI grant for attic insulation, you can still apply for a cavity wall insulation grant, and vice versa).
- You are in a position to finance your desired installation.
- GDSEC provides free independent advice to help you decide on insulation needs.
- Through our combined Attic and Cavity Wall Tender, the programme will provide a competitive quotation from a top qualified installer.
- Step-by-step guidance on how to apply for your SEAI insulation grant.
- Through the pooling of purchasing power, to hopefully provide a potential economies of scale price discount.
At no stage will GDSEC engage in a contract or exchange monies with participating households, we are only here in a voluntary support role.
Please note that to avoid the possibility of participants being scammed by imitators, GDSEC will be your only point of contact until after we make the formal email introduction between yourself and the winning installer. No monies or contracts will be asked for or exchanged with an installer until after this formal email introduction by GDSEC.
GDSEC will only send you important content via our official email account info@greystonesgreenenergy.ie or stonessec@gmail.com, but may send text messages to inform you of a new email (in case it ends up in your spam folder).
Yes, we will only seek bids from installers carrying full public liability insurance and are approved and vetted installers with the SEAI.
Your contract and payment for the installation of your insulation will be made directly between you and the installer.
There are grants of up to €3,200 available from the SEAI for attic and cavity wall insulation combined, (up to €1,500 for attic insulation and €1,700 for cavity wall insulation). Homeowners will need to apply directly to the SEAI for these grants which will be paid on completion of the installation and receipt of an updated BER Certificate for the property. This application process is very straightforward and the installer will give the homeowner guidance on how to proceed.
Participants can leave the programme at any time without penalty, prior to entering into a contract directly with the installer. However, as your participation has a bearing on the final costs for all households, we kindly ask that you only participate if you are willing and financially able to fund an insulation upgrade through this programme, and to contact us immediately if you are no longer able to continue.
